My background with Hydrogen Generation and Storage

Green Hydrogen Electrolyzers

As a professional chemist, I've worked with electrochemistry dating back to the late 1980s and 90s. Much more recently, I've worked with facility size electrolysis projects integrated with operational gas fired power plants. I also worked on IPA's ACES hydrogen storage project intended to add power to southern California. On this project, enormous quantities of hydrogen will be stored underground after being generated by the electrolyzers. One of the goals of the ACES project is to replace IPA's coal fired power plant.

Green Hydrogen and Power Plants

I've spent time at an active Houston area power plant planning the integration of multiple electrolyzers into the feed network to the two turbine trains. This was a hydrogen blending operation using grid power to the electrolyzers and handling the pure oxygen and hydrogen gases that were produced. The existing JAC turbines have the ability to handle a certain percentage of hydrogen which had to be metered in carefully. The project was supported by government grants and involved an overseas supplier of the electrolyzers. I was in many technical meetings where the components of the electrolyzers were discussed in detail as was the sophisticated control system at the power plant. I also participated in the design of the overall hydrogen generation facility that included additional process equipment and hydrogen storage methods. I worked on other similar projects for power plants in the pacific northwest. All these projects were very heavy on scientific technology, materials and engineering design.

Blue Hydrogen / Reforming

As a contract engineer at three refineries, I worked in licensed hydrogen processing units. I've also worked at engineering design firms including Fluor with multiple licensed hydrogen units being integrated into refineries. So I see hydrogen from both the conventional and modern decarbonization perspectives. I performed an operational review of a large IGCC power plant project involving both reforming and carbon capture.
